With its large, bony frill and three horns, Triceratops remains one of the most well known dinosaurs to ever walk the Earth. A typical adult Triceratops would have measured up to nine metres long, and would have weighed up to 12 tonnes. It lived during the Cretaceous Period and in the same ecosystem as Tyrannosaurus rex, which was probably its natural predator.

The first Triceratops skeleton was discovered in 1887 and studied by famous palaeontologist Othniel C Marsh. At the time, Marsh believed the skeleton to be the remains of an ancestor to the modern day bison. Fortunately, Marsh soon realised he’d made a mistake and quickly reversed his error.
